It is time to bring clarity to rip-off letting fees which are already banned in Scotland and which allow some letting agents to charge fees that are unfair over priced.
The average upfront costs for a standard renter in England and Wales is £1,000.
Renters can also be hit by charges of up to £300 for simply renewing their tenancies. Some agents charged £300 for credit checks that are widely available for £25.
Lib Dem, Baroness Olly Grender, will be speaking in favour of banning letting agency fees in the House of Lords. Her Renters’ Rights Bill is due to have its second reading debate in the Lords on Friday 10th June. The bill proposes to:
- Ban letting fees for renters
- Give renters access to an open register of rogue landlords
- Bring in compulsory electrical safety checks in rented homes – this will be
- Prevent rogue landlords from obtaining an HMO licence
This will certainly be a bill to keep an eye on in the future, in Scotland the rental prices have been researched and it has been shown that there has not been an increase in rental fees yet and with increased uncertainty we predict that there will not be a huge change in rental fess, no matter what the outcome.
